What is World Autism Day?
World Autism Awareness Day was declared to ensure those with autism can lead full and meaningful lives, by highlighting the need for support. The day celebrates and promotes the rights and wellbeing of people with Autism globally, shining a light on the benefits of diversity to society.
April the 2nd was declared as World Autism Awareness Day by the UN General Assembly and is celebrated yearly. The theme for 2023 is TBC.
World Autism Day and Employment
There are around 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK. World Autism Day brings together the work, research, and treatment projects of the international community, helping to make progress for people on the autism spectrum. Employers can offer support by:
- Starting your journey to becoming a Disability Confident Employer
- Ensuring policies and procedures are inclusive
- Adopting an inclusive recruitment approach, to accommodate individual’s needs.
- Being clear, precise, and specific in job adverts, specifications, and applications
- Advertising your organisations willingness to provide reasonable adjustments, and consult with the employee around their individual needs
- Providing autism awareness training to all employees, so they can understand why Autistic colleagues may behave in different ways to them
