World Menopause Day
What is World Menopause Day?
This day raises awareness of the Menopause, creates conversations, and supports Women’s health. Menopause is a natural and normal part of women’s ageing process, but this doesn’t mean it isn’t still a cause for concern for many. World Menopause Day supports and improves the health and wellbeing of women in mid-life and beyond, to reduce concerns and educate the people surrounding them.
World Menopause Day is held every year on the 18th of October.
World Menopause Day and Employment
The symptoms of Menopause are wide ranging and are not experienced the same by everyone. They can include Brain fog, Anxiety and low mood alongside physical symptoms not limited to hot flushes, chills, aches and pains, palpitations, and migraines. All of this can make women feel as though they are not themselves, lost and alone.
Given that most employers will have an employee, if not many, who is experiencing the menopause at some point in their employment, it is important to ensure the subject is understood and employees are supported. This can include:
- Menopause awareness training for employees, and managers
- Offering flexible working, altered working patterns or home working
- Share resources that educate and raise awareness
- Ask individuals what they need, which may include more breaks, less travel, meetings at preferred times of the day etc.
