What is Holocaust Memorial Day?
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) remembers the millions of people who lost their lives, and those whose lives have been changed by the Holocaust. The Holocaust occurred during the Second World War and resulted in the deaths of 6 million Jews and 11 million others, by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.
This day takes place on 27th January each year, as it marks the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, with 2025 marking the 80th anniversary.
How is Holocaust Memorial Day observed?
The United Nations General Assembly designated the International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2005. This was done to urge countries around the world to implement educational programmes, share information and prevent genocide from ever happening again.
The theme for 2025 is ‘For a Better Future’, an opportunity for people to come together, learn both from and about the past, and take actions to make a better future for all.
