What is LGBT+ History Month?

LGBT+ History Month both looks back at the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements and celebrates how far the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Plus community have come. It is also a poignant time to look forward, recognise how far there still is to go towards equality for the community. The month drives future change to increase the visibility of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender individuals, their lives, and experiences.

How is LGBT+ History Month Celebrated?

Although the social acceptability of the LGBTQ+ community has changed dramatically in the previous 30 years, there is still much work to be done to ensure the LGBTQ+ community’s inclusion. Every year, events take place, focused on educating people on the history of LGBT and highlighting how governments, organisations, and individuals can help increase LGBT History awareness and celebrate this month.

LGBT+ History Month and Employment

Employers are instrumental is eliminating discrimination against LGBTQ+ colleagues. This can be achieved by creating an inclusive culture and raising awareness as follows:

  • Share information and resources relevant to the day or hold an event, encouraging participation to create awareness
  • Check that policies and procedures are inclusive of LGBTQ+ employees and protect them from discrimination
  • Provide LGBTQ+ education, e-Learning, or training to all employees
  • Create a safe space, such as an employee network or ERG
  • Highlight pathways to support
